| When reading the analysis of each section, I realize just how much more learning I have to do in reading. This novel is thick with analogies and symbolism, all which are key in understanding the depths of what Ellison is trying to illustrate.
The battle is a barbaric and demeaning and reminds us of the inequalities still present between the races. The big guys refusal to stop fighting the narrator shows some of the problems in advancement, when the race continues to fight itself for the betterment of self v. the betterment of the race. | |

| how old do you think the boys were? I felt it odd that the superintendant who seemed to think the author had something going for him would be a part of the crowd or invite the boy to participate. I was surprised that the boy didn't seem to know what was in store for him. i interpreted the big guy not stopping the fight as a symbol of what happens to people when they are thrown in a bad situation, in that they begin to think 'every man for himself'. | |

| I thought they were around 17-18. I agree with your view of the fight. | |

| It is interesting how the different generations felt about being submissive to slavery/racism.
I also agree with both of you.
I'm back on track. | |
