| after reading these chapters I felt compelled to comment on something in chapter one and that was the movie that winston described of the fat man being shot and sunken into the ocean and the boat load of little children being bombed. This and the description of Mrs. Parsons childen is very chilling. As I think about the world today and the way we have become ennurred to violence especially if it is to the 'enemy' ie. the constant killings in Iraq of human beings who just want to live their lives as well as the brain washing that goes on in both their country and ours about why we do what we do in the name of our govenment or religion and it makes me wonder how possible this authors story might become | |

| there is a general feeling thus far that though the country is run by 'bi brother' and multiple groups assigned to specific chores the country is fast falling apart. Ther is the fear though that once Winstons generation dies out no one will remember anything before 'bib brother' and since history has been manipulated what seems so, always was. It is a oretty deoressing book. | |

| It is hard to believe that an entire country or group of countries could come under such control, but then you look back at history, the Nazi Germany, and at present day situations and realize how possible this novel is. In 1984, people are controlled by the information they receive from the telecomunicator, is this really that much different than the way modern day people are fed information by the media?? You are right mom, this is a very distressing book. | |

| As you read further you will find that only 15% of the people in this country are in power and 85% of the people are proles or just regualr folks who just go along with whatever government tells them to do or think. They are not valued by the government and that makes is even scarier. I see some real life parallels here! | |

| there was a blurb in the Newsweek magazine just this week that said 'Talk about Orwellian... George Orwell was actually spied on for ten years by the English Government'. they are releasing the archives this week a to what they say him doing. such mundane stuff as what he was wearing on any given day. Pretty interesting I thought!!!! | |

| I was amazed that the children were involved in as much as they were. Children can be manipulative and evil and could ruin someones life. | |

| the author wanted to portrau that there really was no innocence anywhere even in the very young. the feelings of natural love for parents and their children were effectively squelched therefore the govenrnment wouldnt have to be worried about familial loyalty getting in the way of rabid loyalty to the party. | |
