The unit advances. Their strength and courage grows. They are becoming vetrans. They are becoming couragous. Heroism is no longer important, selfishness is gone. Success comes as a whole.

I agree the regimen gets stronger and so does their self worth. They feel the flag is important and take it upon themselves to keep it raised.

henry and wilson overhear their regiment being put down and de valued by the general. Henry realizes just how he insignificant he personally is to the powers that be. he and Wilson hope to make a going showing of themselves and though they fight like crazy, their regiment doesn't fulfill what the general had in mind
