In the end we see the demise of the entire family because of Emma's behavior. Her daughter ends up living a poor orphan, with an aunt, working hard.

I can't help but think about how deluded Charles was and the plight of his daughter rests in part with his inability to face the truth.We don't get much of a read on Berthe, but what a life she must have had with a mother and father like that, even before she was forced to become a poor relative. How like Rudolphe not to show sorrow upon Emma's death. It was just a passing fancy for him.
