In this section we see that Leon and Emma have fallen 'in love' with each other. She shuns him to save face, and he runs to Paris to escape.

We see that though both the doctor and priest are supposed to 'mend the body and spirit", neither of them even realize there is a problem with in Emma.

Emma doesn't have one maternal instinct. She seems very selfish and unable to be satisfied.

I was amazed how blind Charles was to the infidelities. Didn't he have needs too; spiritual, physical and emotional?

Charles is a one diminesional man. He is unimaginative in every way, this he would never 'imagine' his wife being unfaithful or unhappy. I was struck by Emma's lack of interest in her child and the way it is portrayed that people with some amount of money just pawn off their children. I was interested in Justin being saved from the poor house by his relatives and how they used him. It makes me think of Oliver Twist.

I think that you are making a good point about Charles being so unimaginitive that he would never even think of her straying.
