This section is foreshaddowing the ultimate doom of the meeting with Moby Dick. Ahab's maddness increases as he remains on deck, watching a waiting, even his appearance takes on the dishelved look of insanity. Then one moment he seems to reflect on his chase and his life. Starbuck, seeing this hopes for the best and approaches Ahab.

I can almost hear the deep music that always signinifies impending doom (in the movies) as I read this section.

The crew hears what they think is the mermaids. Ahab laughs and tells them that they are just seals. They meet another ship and are asked for help and Ahab refuses them so he can search for Moby-Dick. Ahab senses that he is near, but he is getting extremely tired of the chase.

I hear the music too Kelley.

I am going to push on and finish this sucker today.

Wow~ i am surprised how many ships are met while on the ocean. there were only 40 whaling ships, in all, i thought, when Melville wrote about the book that has the 'signals' in it so ships could recognize one another. The sea is huge. You would think they would miss each other more often than not. It was in character for Ahab to dismiss helping the captain of the Rachel look for his son.
The conversation betwen Ahab and Starbuck about their family and life other than the sea demonstrates both the futility of trying to talk Ahab out of continuing the chase and the finalilty that will come with its conclusion.

As far as the ships on the sea, they probably only went in certain areas where the whales travel. I'm sure they had a migration pattern.
