This is an action packed chapter, with twists and turns that Dick Wolf would be envious of.

I really liked reading SparkNotes interpretations of what Bertha may represent at this point. I tend to agree with the last one, that Bertha represents Jane's hidden feelings and fears regarding marriage and being a subject or second class, which are feelings that she has had but kept inside the entire book. Bertha's outburst is what saves Jane from the marriage.

On the other hand, Rochester really seems to love Jane, and it is awful that he cannot get away from Bertha. It will all depend on his behavior in up coming chapters towards Jane, on how I feel towards him about all of this.

obviously all the staff at Thronfield knew about Berha. I'm surprised non of them intervened about the upcoming marriage. I agree Rochester loves Jane but did he really think he could pull off the secet for ever? Granted he said he would tell jane the truth a year and a day from the wedding but did he think jane would be predisposed to stay?

OK guys, if Mr. Rochester never married Bertha he would have been "poor." Thus, in Jane's class of marrying options.

The showdown action-packed chapter was excellent. It brought a lot together.

I thought that Rochester was originally to get some money from Bertha's family, but that most of his money and property came to him when both his father and his brother died.

Also doesn't Rochester say that no one knew about the truth of Bertha but her nurse and the surgeon??

Now that you say that, I think it's both. Originally it was just from Bertha.
