This set of chapters plays on the importance of class in marriage (bringing up some of the points we read about in P&P). Rose and Harry love each other, but are from very different classes, and Rose fears that her status will harm Harry.
The Bumbles, who married with in thier class, are miserable and fight regularly.

The mystery also thickens, now we have to wonder at what Rose's parentage is, and what is the "stain" on her name? And who is Monks? ANd what does he know, that we don't?

Also during this section I noticed how much attention was paid to Rose as she was ill and recovering, compared to Oliver as he was injured. We don't know Rose very well yet, but I felt like we were suppposed to have quite a bit of sympathy for her situation...Dickens spent pages talking about her illness and the grief everyone felt. In contrast, Oliver, who we know well had very little said about his injury, illness and recovery, it was almost skimmed over.

Last but not least, I am not sure if Oliver really saw Fagin and the other man at his window, or if it was a dream, I tend to think that if they were there they would have taken him. Plus I don't know if I think that Fagin's character is driven enough to look far and wide for Oliver, especially when he may be dead.

I think that it is interesting that everyone wants Oliver. His character of being naturally timid and "angelic" is his downfall in this time.

My favorite part is when Mrs. Bumble gives it back to Mr. Bumble. The both are very superficial.

I think it is in these chapters that Oliver take the oath to correspond to Harry. He makes this an honor and a privelege to do so. This tells us that Oliver is getting a good education and is moving up intellectually. I also think that the time he spends with Rose and her Aunt is making Oliver grow.

I think dickens spends time on Roses illness and recovery because she is female, and of a gentle class and born good. I think the stain is going to be that she is illegitimate.
I think dickens, when depicting mr and mrs bumble is saying that they 'deserve' each other, and yes, they are the same class but also the same temperament and moral values.

At the point that Dickens is discussing Rose's illness, did you find it hard to sympathize with a character that we don't know very well? I felt like I knew her better later on, but at this point struggled.
