Nick has taken a responsibility of Gatsby. I'm glad for that. As we see later, nobody else in his "society" world really cared.

the author did a good job deriving sympathy from the reader for Gatsby. I was sad that the affair failed and really sad Gatsby got killed. I liked him all along. I knew from the beginning all the 'friends' would be fair weather but didn't think that no one would come to the funeral but a few staff and one person. What do you think the owl eyed glasses man was symbolizing? How about Gatsbys dad?
I think Nick just felt extremely tired and worn down by the entire affair. The house and its emptiness symbolized the empty shell and the unrealisticness of Gatsbys affection for Daisy. That she didn't make an effort in the end was really a stab in the back
