In this set of chapters there is a comparison of the childs v adult world. We see the different social structures, the value placed on relgion/curses, and personal interactions.
The boys witnessing the murder emphasises the contrast as they are thrown into the adult world but react with a child's oath.

Good point Kelley. The situations that they are thrown into are not what the normal "southern" child would probably encounter.
