the plan to incorporate a woman to help him bring downwthe brotherhood ends in a drunken disaster with the woman wanting to experience rape by a black man. he can't bring himself to do it and before he can be rid of her he gets a call from harlem that all hell is breaking loose. by the time he gets in the general area he has been accidentally winged in the head by a bullet from a policeman and then gets involved with rioting and looting. ras is in the area and wants the narrator to be hung as a traitor. the narrator tries to bring rreason to ras and the crowd but Ras won't hear of it. he finally gets away by falling into an uncovered man hole where he nearly goes mad trying to get out and burns all of his important papers trying to make light. the papers being burned signify just how unimportant they really were. he recognizes the hand wrting on the anonomous letter and on the sheet stating his brotherhood name as the same. jack wrote both. In the end he reaffirms his invisibility and ponders his grand fathers words. He does get out ot the manhole but referrs to himself asliving or being underground. he sees an aged Norton at the train station but Norton doesn't remember him or the comments he made to him about being Nortons destiny.

An interesting end to the novel don't you think?? I feel bad that he never did stand up for what was right, even though he had the voice to do so.

I am not sure that he felt he had a grip on what was right at the end. he had some idea's but they did not seem crystalized to me. He was very charismatic though which is what good leadersreally need. there are soe good candidates this year in the political arean, but not all of them come across well, like dennis Kusinich. He needs a ful baritone voice and a dramitc flair for people to take him seriously.
