It is amazing to see how much control the Party has over its members. The fact that a facial twitch or a look could mean death, that people constantly hide behind a mask...

I also found it interesting that the morning workout reminded Winston that he specifically wasn't working hard enough (isn't that your worst fear when doing a workout video he he) but that the control is that consuming.

We meet Syme who kind of a friend of Winstons. He is very smart and does his job so well that winston worries he will be evapaorated. Ultimatley he comes to the conclusion that they all will (meanin the people he knows) except for his neighbor, Mr. Pasons, who is the perfect example of the governing class.
Winston is obsessed with the idea of a sexual relationship and we get to read about his last exploit and also his relationship with his wife, Katherine. who was brainless in winstons opionion.
the author states the the women in the movement have been successfully transitioned away from sexual desire but it has not been as successful for the men of the party

I really don't think taking out words in a dictionary or vocabulary will stop people from thinking about them. They think that they are being above the common person, but they really aren't.

They are trying to fight human nature.

the thing is though, Marti, is that after a couple of generations where words are missing and things are never discussed, and history is re-written people just forget or never know about that stuff. It is like now when the old folks die, if their stories aren't written down or told over and over, they are lost. winstons girl friend will demonstrate that later in the book when history that is still in Winstons mind is already unkown to her because it was re-written and she has no memory of what really occurred.
