| In this section we see how irresponsible Lydia is, as she runs off with Wickham, regardless of how this affects her sisters. The parents in this situation are rediculous and incompetent, we see that Jane, Liza, and Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner are responsible for finding Lydia and keeping the family together.
Also we see that Elizabeth leans on Darcy when she hears the news, and has no trouble confiding in him what is going on with her family, regardless of the class issues.
SparkNotes points out how Elizabeth's reaction to Lydia's behavior is inconsistent with her feelings towards women's roles in relationships in this era.

| I think these few chapters show different situations that could ocur in that time period. Lydia and Wickham are both selfish. Wickham is showing that he is a low life.
The Gardiner's have money and are helping their "family name." I don't know if that's right, but they feel that they have to do it.
The main reason, I think, for these chapters is to bond Darcy and Elizabeth and Austen did a good job at that.

| Mr and Mrs. Bennet stay true to form with Mrs Bennet worrying about what might happen if her husband dies in London and Mr. Bennett giving up and coming home. I wonder why Wickham choose lydia when he knew she had no money and and she was not the most beautiful girl. Was his real motive sex and then dump her? he cared too much about his own reputation to do that, i think. | |

| I thought that Wickham's motive probably was sex too, and that he would have dumped her and ran if it weren't for Darcy paying him off to do the 'honourable' thing and marry her. | |
