Henry is conflicted between choosing life or courage. He views the wounds as proof of courage, proof that the men stayed and fought.

Henry's friend is killed and death becomes even more personal.

Henry is brought into reality. He first yearns for the red badge of courage and then realizes that more men are dying from this badge and he's trying to avoid it.

Maybe this book is so acclaimed because it is taking such an indepth look at one young adults thoughts and feelings of war and courage. It is pretty indepth.

henry is struggles with his desire for the red badge which would give him an excuse for being behind the lines. the description of Jims death was hrrowing as was the description of the tattered man. i felt so bad for them both and irretiated with henrythat he was not sympathetic to the tattered man. henry got his badge (ticket) but by one of his own men, when he was hit on the head givng him entree to his regiment without having to be honest.
