| Tom is growing up. He still has moments of immaturity, but soon corrects his behavior and acts almost gallantly.
He realizes the consequences for Potter if he doesn't come forward, so risks his own safety for another.
Twain pokes fun at the townspeople for their ability to change thier opions so quickly, they hate Potter, love Potter, find religion, return to their old ways, as quick as a light switch. | |

| As we see in Huck Finn, Tom is not the angel that we think. He has different motives for all his actions. They are not like Huck's. | |
