We are introduced to some of the main characters. Aunt Polly is a soft hearted and handed disciplinarian. Tom is a sharp and mischevious child. Jim is a young slave and Tom's friend. Sid is the little brother.

We begin to see the social structure Tom lives in.

I did like this book more than Huck Finn. There were more characters and a better plot in Tom Sawyer.
