Interestingly what I found important in this set of chapters is completely different from what SparkNotes analysis says.

I thought that it was important that Starbuck stood up to Ahab, and pointed out that Ahab's madness and obsession with Moby Dick, was letting him make decisions that poorly affected the entire ship and its purpose. Telling Ahab to be fearful of himself.

Queequeg's desire for control over his death, the disposal of his body, and his desire to pass on some of his culture is important. The fact that it is allowed shows that Queequeg has gained respect and is important on this ship. (which is clearly a distinct difference from how he would be or was treated on land) Showing that strength, work ethic, and reliability has become more important than race.

The whales are described again. Ahab’s leg breaks after a trauma and he gets a new leg made. Ahab puts his stubbornness in front of the crews profits. He doesn’t want to stop and fix the oil casks. He finally gives in and gets it repaired. Queequeg gets severely ill and thinks he’s going to die. He makes himself a coffin, puts his idol and harpoon in it and gets inside. He finally gets better and everyone thinks that he willed himself better.

I think the strongest point in the entire book is when Ishmael relates that the sea beckons to the brokenhearted men who long for death and can’t commit suicide.
