This pressure that St. John is giving Jane is quite interesting. St. John has had an insight that Jane would be excellent in this situation. He grooms her for this task.
When did he decide to do this? When in the story did he realize she would be a good candidate for this? Any guesses?
With the refusal of marriage to him she would deny Christianity is a real low blow. (During the last few posts I knew what was going to happed. Now I don't). He's trying anything.
If Jane takes him up on this, she is giving into the fact that love in a marriage is not an issue. Whether it is for a fortune of money or a faith induced guilt for Christianity.
If she gives into St. John, she is hypocritical. If she feels her own principles are not an issue (whether it is Christianity or bigomy) , then she should have been Rochester's mistress. What's the difference?
