This is a very large book. Mine is 800 pages. Holy crap. This book is about a fish.

First thing, I need to get this off my chest. Who the heck is Ishmal.

"Call Me Ishmal."

When I read SparkNotes 'context' section, as I always do in preparation for a book, I have to admit I am a little worried to hear that Moby Dick "stands alongside James Joyce’s Ulysses and Laurence Sterne’s Tristram Shandy as a novel that appears bizarre to the point of being unreadable but proves to be infinitely open to interpretation and discovery."

Anyone Else?? Shocked

I like reading 'context' section too. It tells us that melville met hawthorne and admired him and that Moby dick was dedicated to him. I does sound a bit daunting with regard to Joyces Ulysses even if the 800 pages does scare one off!

OK Ishmal is the narrator. I got that down. It's from the Bible.

Jean Luc Picard (Star Trek Captain of the Next Generation) AKA Patrick Stewart plays Ahab in the movie version. I am going to definitely rent that movie.

Yup! he sure is!
the description of Ahab a bit later in book was not very attractive.
