| I had to have a break from Moby-Dick so I peeked into Uncle Tom's Cabin. I stayed away from the introduction because sometimes it gives so much away. I did read about Harriet Beecher Stowe and was fascinated that she was from Connecticut and wrote about the South.
When she was 13 she moved to Cincinatti and was very close to Kentucky. I imagine the border states of slavery made everyone aware of the horrors of it. This novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was the first novel to explore and criticize the institution of slavery (notes from Penguin Classics).
The last twenty years of her life she slipped into a chronic illness and senility that begam in 1878. She died almost 20 years later. How aweful. | |

| What a beautiful book I have found. I ordered Uncle Tom's Cabin on Amazon, for just a couple of dollars, but I think it may be a first edition. It is beautiful and old; I am excited to get started. | |
