The story is winding down, and Lily finally realizes what it is all about. She does the right thing and gets rid of the letters.

As many other classics main characters, she is probably going to kill herself.

Same as the other classics.

Lilly can't hold on to her job as a hat maker. she takes sleeping pills at night. she patches it up with rosedale and to some extent, Seldon. She still feels she was destined to a better life, as if that is actually something humans are truly born to and not about hard work and good choices.

It is interesting how much more difficult it is to enjoy a novel if you don't have any particular connection to the protaganist. I think about all of the novels that I thought were just so-so, Madame Bovary, The House of Mirth, The Heart of Darkness, etc. and I didn't care much about any of the main characters, and maybe that is why I felt disconncted from the book. Pride and Prejudice was 'fluffy' as well, but I really enjoyed it (but I really liked and empathized with Elizabeth)

What do you guys think

maybe pride ad prejudice was better because it was our first book in this style. we've gotten tired of it after 3 or 4 more!
