3. Compare and contrast Charles and Rodolphe. What are their attitudes about love? How does each respond to Emma?

Charles' love for Emma evolved through their life together, as every marriage does. Initially he loved the idea of her, and then the attention she provided, then for the daughter she had, and then for the wife he believed her to be. Even though he wasn't very in tune with her feelings, or aware of her behavior, he trusted her, and enjoyed the time they had together. (in his defence Emma went to great lengths to convince him that their marriage was ok)

Rodolphe only loved Emma for the excitement of the chase and the rewared of the sex. He loved to have conquered her. To have her chase him, sneak around, want him...He never knew her heart or cared to. He didn't care about how he or the relationship would affect her or her family's life.
