They find a ship that picks them up. Luckily there is another woman on the ship named Sallie. She takes her under her wing and cares for her. She is a motherly figure and Una is receptive. The three friends enjoy each others company.

It is ironic that Kit starts to go mad after they are rescued. Giles falls off the rigging and dies. Una has to deal with both of these stressors. She does it well. Giles, her love is gone and she takes solice with Kit.

Una's hands are full with Kit and his dementia. As a nurse, I wonder what kind of mental illness his mother had that Kit inherited. She is very loyal to Kit. I find it odd that when all three of the friends have a little party together they say that they feel that they are all three married together. That is a wonderful friendship.

During Kit's madness he asks Una to marry her. She says yes without a doubt. Captain Swain will not allow it due to Kit's dementia.

Then comes the Pequod............................................

I thought that it finally seemed as though Kit was in love with Una, Una with Giles, and Giles with himself and his knowledge. I think that it is likely that Giles didn't slip, but had so much guilt that he couldn't cope. I do feel bad for the situation that Una is in with Kit and his madness.

I really didn't care if Giles slipped or jumped. What was left was poor Una and her disfunctional husband.
