though the sermon ws loooong and to my mind rambling i could see where the reverend was going, though i had read spark notes to know he might be referring to booker t washington. I don't know if those things really happened to to Mr. Washington. Mr Bledsoe'mask' was obvious to me and it morrored a servility that I have seen in black leaders (and white ministers and politicians) who wanat to appear humble and god fearing ad honest when underneath it is all about what they can get from the person they are speaing to. I feel confident that the letters given to the narrator will say something like 'this boy is not to be trusted."

I agree, I am sure that the letters will not help the narrator, but hurt his chances of finding work. It is a shame to see that even after being confronted by all of the duplicity of Bledsoe, that he would still blindly follow his suggestion of moving to New York. This is a pretty complex novel, with many symbols and lines of thought.

I'm having a tough time with this one. Putting the comments both of you have and the spark notes, I'm barely keeping up.

I will persevere.

it gets better Marti. the sermon was the most difficult and lengthy part of this entire book!
