Winston is finally broken, his moment of self preservation and giving up Julia breaks him completely. Winston is not eliminated yet, but continues to live in society, controlling his thoughts and behaving appropriately. Yet, he is a shell of the man he used to be.

did that surprise you that Winston and Julia weren't killed? I did me, since the athor constantly refered to people who just disapeared. He ends up at the Chestnut Tree. Why was he deemed fit to live, in your opinio n? Did you thing it was a bit much that Orwell referred to Winston not wanting to have sex with her? How about just not being in love with her?

I was really surprised at how sexual the entire book was. The references are everywhere.

Maybe making the characters spirits broken shows us that Wells wants us to think that the Party won.

I was sad that winston and julia broke, but I think I would have, too. The book didn't leave any little glimmer of hope that things might improve, etiher, did you think?
