I admired Jan and Max and the characters they protrayed. It gave me a bit of insite on what communism was supposed to represent back in those days. It sounds like it was a good idea that somehow went bad. I was glad that Bigger finally recognized them both to be good people.
Again it was amazing what the judge would allow in court. I knew how what the verdict would be. It couldn't be any other way and stay true to the story.
I liked thinking about the author who wrote this story in the times in which it took place and how much uproar the book surely must have caused.

I thought it was well written because the communists and racism were intertwined. There is not a group of indivuduals that weren't guilty. They all added into the growth of our society with racism.

Karen, I did like Mary, but Jan was a bit selfish in his devotion. It probably took a lot of people like Mary to make our society the way it is now.

See, and I liked Jan better. I thought he was more 'real'. Mary eemed like a young woman who had gotten caught up with the idea of communisim without really thinking it through. She had a fairy tale pictue of how it could all work out without relly knowing the basic experiences backs and others less fortunate than she, had. jan seemed like a man who had real convictions and was hoping that with time, Mary could learn and relly understand.

I thought that Max was the best of the three characters. He really seemed to understand or try to understand Bigger in a way that wasn't for his own entertainment or hard on Bigger. He seemed to be able to empathise with him, maybe because of prejudices he felt as a Jew.

Well, and Max was an older man and an educated one which may have had soething to do with it, though the ostrasism he experienced as a jew was pretty huge.
