Mrs. Dalloway goes into town to purchase some flowers for a party she is giving. We have insight into her thoughts, and though she often seems optomistic and happy, she occassionally thinks of her own aging body and death. She often thinks of what and who is around her, appreciating the beauty and uniqueness of each. The downtown is excited by a 'royal' vehicle and many follow to the gates of the castle to see who it is, but they are distracted by an airplane writing words in the sky. (a toffee ad) Septimus is a vetran who appears to suffer from PTSD or possibly some early stage dementia. He also contemplates his mortality and the things going on around him. We see that he and his wife view each other very differently.

I thought this first section was difficult to follow. The author is "SUPER"omnicient and sees/hears a bit too much. I think it may be hard to get 'into' this one. SparkNotes helped to clear up some of the ideas.
