Section 3: Chapters 1-3

In these chapters we get a better feel for Raskol's family. His sister's characteristics parallel his, as pointed out by Raz, but she handles herself well.

Raz describes Raskol to a tee when he is speaking to Dunya and her mother in the morning. This whole section seemed to be character development.

Section 3: Chapters 4-6

Raskol begins by 'playing' with both his family and Porfiry. He listens intently and is able to communicate with himself, to allow him to talk with Porfiry, and lead him one way then another, without confessing.

The stranger that calls him a murderer, reignites his guilt and worry, and he begins again to dream and wander. He loses some control over himself.

We also see through the conversation about the article, why Raskol may have committed the murder. On the other hand we clearly see that he is not a extraordinary, and I don't believe he sees himself as one.

I thought that the stranger was well placed and in the general plot of the book was irrelevant. This character brought more depth into the book for me. I needed it at that point.

The stranger was the conscience on Raskol's back.

I think that you are right about the stranger also playing the role of his concience.

I agree that this section provided character development and a chance to see others persepctive of Raskol.
