We are introduced to Charles Bovary, his parents, first wife, and Emma in these first sections. I believe that the traits and relationships Charles has had with his parents and Heloise will provide some insight into his future relationship with Emma.

Charles is dull and shallow
Heloise is manipulative and jealous
Madame Bovary (mother) is shallow and lonely
Monsier Bovary (father) reclusive and mean

Emma seems bright and naive
Her father is kind but struggling financially

I agree with these traits. I would think that Charles would be more of a manipulative type person with his father as a horrible role model for a marriage.

Yes, this was an introduction and a bit of back ground on charles and family. Your descriptions were appropriate, I think Brienne.
I didn't know who the main protagonist was going to be for sure until I read Spark Notes.
