These chapters are heart-breaking too. Una stands by Kit's side through many outbursts. The worst one was when he urinated on her in public.
Further on we find out that his mother did the same thing and it was a confession of nature to urinate outside. Very deep.

Kit goes to jail and Una does not visit him until Charlotte encourages her. Charlotte apparently loves Kit more than Una does. Charlotte would rather have him mad than not at all. She even offered them a place to stay aboe the tavern. Odd.

During this time Una confides in Charlotte about Una's heinous crime. Charlotte vows never to speak of it again. I think some of that loyalty is because of Kit and her love for him.

Kit excapes and leaves Una. He runs west and starts a new life somewhere away from Una. She is probably a terrible reminder of their past.

When Una walks home Ahab walks beside her and he takes her hand quietly and they walk together. This is very touching. Ahab has been watching her from afar and shows up whenever she needs comfort.

Is Ahab more loyal to Una than Kit ever was?

How does Una see Ahab? He is older and experienced in life and knows how to comfort Una with all her problems?

What do you think?

Another twist of the plot is when Isaac rescues the little black boy from the fire and Una tries to save Isaac with mouth to mouth. She sees that he died after the rescue.

Does Una marry Ahab because Isaac is gone or is it because she knows Ahab will be the right choice for her. Ahab understands the life at sea she has led.

OK- apparently I was a bit wrong about how Giles felt...I didn't see that one coming at all!!

I am glad that Kit left, and Una is free of him and his hatefulness and madness. I am hoping that she will move on and find love again. (Although I suppose that the title may be foreshaddowing a bit, he he)

Didn't that one knock you back a few steps. This writer really knows how to do it.
