It was very interesting that Una has already experienced a ship that sunk. The experience of floating in a whale boat adds to her future understanding of the whaler's life.
I was surprised that the three friends were the only ones who physically survived the journey at sea. When reading the part about cannabalism I often wonder how far a person (even myself) would go to survive.

There was definitely a bit of foreshaddowing when the captain (I think) says that the members of their ship should be more concerned with the cannibals with in.
It is interesting how much experience Una already has at sea.
