Weeks and weeks go by with no word from Kit and Giles. It must have been grueling waiting for them to return. Finally they did and they brought the mail. Una's mother was pregnant and happines set in for everyone.

The second letter from her mother was saddening. Her father killed himself so he wouldn't ruin another life. That man was mentally deranged. Instead of being positive that he could do better (in his eyes) he just gave up and commited suicide. Una's mother decides to come to the Lighthouse to have the baby, but has a miscarriage during the journey. More tragedy. Then her mother decides to go back to Kentucky. More disappointment for Una.

I empathize with Una. She has lost so much and been disappointed in all areas of her life.

Now a new adventure presents itself to her. The Cabin Boy.

I found it interesting that Una's father kills himself. He was concernced with failing again, but his failure came from his unrelenting views of religion, which he gave up in the end to kill himself. I wonder if when he was pondering suicide, and how the Bible teaches against it, why he didn't realize that if he had it in himself to turn on his religion in shame, why he couldn't do it for love.

Una and her mother have had many disappointments lately, it is too bad they aren't together.

The book touches a little on the father again later in the book. This author has a way of not letting you in on everything right way. It is great.

There is no issue that this author won't touch. I guess I compare it to the Wicked because that was a new author to me and there was alot of gothic/contemporary type ideas in it too.
