| We see Captain Boomer as Ahab's oposite. He is also injured, but accepts his injury and feels no vengence to Moby Dick, unlike Ahab whose vengence is maniacal. | |

| Pip is introduced and gets into some trouble. This shows us that the crew is not too forgiving. More of the processing of the whale is discussed.
I am starting to see that there is not a whole lot of Ahab’s insanity described. It is mostly the whaling culture and industry that is talked about. Ahab’s drive keeps the ship moving, but most of the book is discussing the culture. It keeps us hungry for the story of Ahab. Is that Melville’s intention. | |

| It sounds pretty tough on Pip and I wondered if the crew would have done that to an adult ? Again we read of the awesome amount of work that it took to render the spermaceti into useful product. The whalers must have worked from dawn to dusk. Ishmael shows he is really taken with the job! Ahab is told that Moby Dick will b spotted in a month by the manxman after much discussion of the coin affixed to the mast. He states it will occur in the month of the Zodiac in which it represents. the introduction of Boomer and his lack of desire to chase Moby Dick helped to show the madness in Ahabs plan. The abrupt departure of ahab instead of enjoying the ships hospitality shows his desire not to be dissuaded from capturing the white whale. | |
