i found it unbelieveable that the rivers would just let Jane come into their lives. It goes against what people of the times did back then. They were in no hurry to have her go though they were in straightened circumstances themselves. She does make friends with mary and diana and feels an affinaty toward them because they are all governesses. She takes st. john up on working at his school and though the girls are rough she takes pride in their learning.

I differ with you Karen about the generosity of the people of the times. If the books that we ahve read are any indication of the people, we have had many giving people; ex. Mr. Brownlow (OT).

I think Jane was very childish and once again stupid. She left Thornfield because of her emotions and didn't use her head to have self-preservation. She was probably the most destitute that we have read about yet. Not a good plan. I think with all the opportunities she was given (Lowood teacher, Adele's governess, girl's school teacher) she wasn't really happy. What is going to make her happy. I have not seen her extremely happy except with the few days that she was accepted as Mr. Rochester's fiance. That was the first opportunity that we was her "happy" and even then she was reserved in her decisions. It all stemmed down to the class conscious behavior they were suppose to follow.

Miss Oliver is out of character for her class. Most of the women in our books showed us they were snobby people at heart. Miss Oliver was not. She wanted to be Jane's friend because she enjoyed the scene of the school and Jane's talents as an artist.

I wonder if in this section we see Mr. Rivers denying himself Miss Oliver because of duty to the church as a parallel to what Jane did with Mr. Rochester. She gave up love because she felt it was the "right" thing to do, but when she sees Mr. Rivers do the same, she pushes him to be happy in love...

Good parallel with Mr. Rivers.

I have a hard time understanding Jane's decisions. Through most of her life she was unhappy and desolate, she gets many opportunities to have a decent life. In those times, a school teacher or a governess is not a bad career. She never showed her interest in romance and marriage until Mr. Rochester. Is this true love? Is that what we are suppose to assume is that when true love happens nothing else matters?
