I thought that all of this was coming. Since Jane met Rochester, we felt the coneection and the possibility of their blooming romance, but I surely didn't think that it would come so soon. It was sneaky of Rochester to use Miss Ingram to make Jane jealous, although you had to wonder what he was up to when he pretended to be the gypsy.

I feel for Jane, who is madly in love, but obviously sees being married as giving up some of her independence. Jane doesn't want to be indebted to Rochester, or be "less than" anyone. She seems to be struggling on how to have her love and maintain her dignity and strength with in their relationship.

it was interesting how by giving miss ingram the info that his fortune was only worth a third of its purported value that rochester was able to get miss ingram to leave him alone. i thought it was cruel for him to play jane so long, pretending to make plans marry Blanche, to the point of leading jane to think she would need to move out.
i was glad john reed got his just desserts as did 'aunt' Reed. and how cruel of her to tell janes 'Eyre' uncle that Jane had died.
Interesting that Mrs fairfax is luke warm about rochester and janes nuptuals, too.

Does everyone of that time period feel that if they are married, they are trapped forever?

Jane stayed at Goatshead out of duty. Mr. Rochester was quite coniving with the false affections toward Ingrim. I don't blame him though. It blows my mind that Mr. Rochester got his money from Bertha and her family.

Rochester and Jane meet back at Thornfield. They walk for a while and end up under a chestnut tree. Later on the tree gets hit by lightening and splits into two. Ironic or what.

Why does Mr. Rochester say that he will tell Jane everything in one and a half years?

I do think the chestnut tree is foreshadowing. Remember there is a little bit of supernatural happenings too. We will see more of it in the future chapters.
